URETHRITIS, CAUSES, SYMPTOMS, URETHRITIS TREATMENT

Urethritis is inflammation of the urethra, the pathway that carries urine from the bladder to the urinary meatus, the opening through which urine exits, and the periurethral glands.

This inflammation is of infectious origin in most cases, and it is then part of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and is most often transmitted during sexual intercourse. Contagious, it increases the risk of HIV infection and can make you sterile.

FORMS OF URETHRITIS

There are several germs at the origin of urethritis such as gonococcus or chlamydia. However, reports Dr Georges Delamare, the general practitioner "urethritis is not necessarily an STI and can occur spontaneously". Urethritis is a major public health issue worldwide because it is common, highly contagious, and increases the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and is a common cause of infertility in women. In men, urethritis can cause prostatitis, which will also be a cause of infertility.

Non-infectious urethritis:
Although rarer than infectious urethritis, non-infectious forms of urethritis exist. They are caused by inflammation, an increase in the size of the prostate or a testicular abnormality as well as, more rarely, surgical causes or cancer of one of these organs. Dr Delamare also warns against "certain sexual practices such as source which consists of pushing rods, fingers, pencils or the like into the penis via the urethra, superficially or deeply, until eventually tickling the bladder". The absence of an infectious cause must nevertheless evoke differential diagnoses such as a tumour, irritation (spermicide, soap, etc.), overactive bladder, interstitial cystitis or other bladder emptying disorders. In all cases, a specialist opinion from a urologist or gynaecologist is then necessary.

Gonococcal urethritis:

Gonococcal urethritis is caused by a bacterium, gonococcus (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) called gonorrhoea. It is the most common urethritis. It usually manifests itself a few days after the contamination, which probably took place during unprotected sexual intercourse with an already infected person. Gonorrhoea can be associated with the second bacterium frequently involved, Chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis): this mixed form is common and accounts for 25% of cases. This is typically what is called "hot piss" explains Dr Delamare.

Non-gonococcal urethritis:

We speak of non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) when gonorrhoea has been excluded: we can find other germs such as streptococcus. Some NGOs are transmitted during sexual intercourse. There are many possible causes, and in some people, the cause is never determined. However, the infections most frequently responsible for NGU are Chlamydia and Mycoplasma genitalium infections, which account for 20 to 70% of cases. Other germs or viruses that can cause NGU are Trichomonas vaginalis, U. urealyticum, adenoviruses or viruses such as Herpes simplex types 1 and 2. Bacteria responsible for infection of the urinary tract (kidneys, bladder and urethra) can also lead to inflammation of the urethra. Finally, vaginal infection in women, such as mycosis or bacterial vaginosis, can be responsible for NGU in her partner.

CAUSES OF URETHRITIS

Urethritis is the most common manifestation of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Transmission of the pathogen(s) occurs through contact with the penis, vagina, mouth, or anus of an infected person, even an asymptomatic one. Contamination can also occur in the absence of ejaculation.
