Gastric ulcer: natural treatment

What is an ulcer?
In general, an ulcer is defined as a wound that persists without healing for a month or more, whether it is located on the skin, on a blood vessel, or on the mucous membranes (such as in the stomach or duodenum).
A gastric ulcer, also called a stomach ulcer, refers to damage to the inner lining of the stomach (or the duodenal lining if it is a duodenal ulcer). Two types of cells make up the inner lining of the stomach:
- those responsible for the secretion of gastric juice, an essential element for the digestion of food;
- those responsible for protecting the lining of the stomach and duodenum against the acidity of gastric juice: the cells that secrete bicarbonate and mucus.
It is essential to maintain a balance between these two types of cells in order to preserve the proper functioning of the stomach. If this balance is disrupted, the mucosa suffers the corrosive effects of gastric juice and gets injured. It ends up being destroyed, that's the ulcer. This is followed by a loss of substance until the outer muscular wall of the stomach is reached.

What are the causes of a gastric ulcer?
Two major causes have been identified for the appearance of a gastric ulcer, in addition to a rare cause:
- the presence of a bacterium, Helicobacter pylori: the presence of this bacterium is confirmed in 95% of cases of duodenal ulcer and in 85% of cases of gastric ulcer, according to the SNFGE. It is a bacterium very often contracted from a young age and whose presence generates asymptomatic gastritis in the early years. However, while it promotes gastric ulcers, infection with the Helicobacter pylori bacterium does not systematically lead to ulcers;
- the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and aspirin: whether the person has taken these treatments for a short or long duration, the risk of gastric ulcer exists. The explanation is simple: NSAIDs prevent the secretion of an enzyme (cyclooxygenases 1 and 2). However, this enzyme is responsible for stimulating the production of mucus intended to protect the stomach lining from the acidity of gastric juice. The stomach lining is therefore vulnerable and is destroyed upon contact with gastric acidity;
- a tumor: very rare, gastrinoma-type tumors of the pancreas lead to an increased secretion of gastrin, a hormone that stimulates the production of gastric acid.
What are the risk factors for a gastric ulcer?
Stress is often thot to be a risk factor for peptic ulcers. The SNFGE states that scientific research has not established any link between psychological condition and gastric ulcer. However, other risk factors for peptic ulcer have been highlighted, including smoking. It is possible that smoking is less likely to cause a stomach or duodenal ulcer, than it is to delay the healing of one once it has occurred (slowing down the wound healing). The risk of ulcers is increased by the consumption of stimulants (such as coffee, tea, alcohol...) and spicy foods, as these irritate the intestinal lining. Ultimately, genetic factors, particularly affecting the vulnerability of stomach cells, can contribute to the development of a gastric ulcer, just like certain comorbidities (cirrhosis, Crohn's disease...).

How to Treat a Stomach Ulcer?
Here are some natural approaches that can help relieve the symptoms of stomach ulcers:
Balanced diet: Adopt a balanced diet that avoids spicy, fatty, and irritating foods. Opt for foods rich in fiber, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins.
Reduce stress: Stress can worsen ulcer symptoms. Practice stress management techniques such as meditation, yoga, or relaxation to help reduce stress.
Raw honey: Raw honey has antibacterial properties and can help soothe the gastric mucosa. Take a tablespoon of raw honey once or twice a day.
Aloe vera: Pure aloe vera gel can help relieve inflammation and protect the gastric mucosa. Drink aloe vera juice or take aloe vera supplements according to the instructions.
Ginger: Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and can help relieve nausea and discomfort. Prepare fresh ginger tea or consume ginger in the form of capsules or tinctures.
Licorice: Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is a form of licorice that can help protect the gastric mucosa. Take DGL supplements according to the instructions.
